Ivan was part of the original design studio of 12, and the project was brought to life with the help of over 100 volunteers.&nbsp; The Carapace Pavilion is a collaborative effort between the Clipper Lab Studio of USC and supported by engineering consultants, fabricators and sponsors. National Parks rarely allow construction/manmade structures in the parks to protect the integrity of the park, our goal is to design something that feels like it was born out of its surrounding. To push material boundaries of Ultra-high performance concrete. Typical concrete construction uses a combination of rebars embedded within concrete to create a combination that is strong in both tensile and compressive strengths.The limitations of this construction is limited by the size and thickenss of rebars + concrete which typically requires 6-10 inches thick. With the innovative material provided by Lafarge, we are able to decrease the thickenss needed for this pavilion to ~2”. Utilizing fiber-reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), the structure was able to forgo several design limitations of standard precast concrete, such as the need for rebars, reduced thickness (overall weight) and increased strength (from 4500 psi to 18,000 psi). The tubular form is both structurally sound and allows the entire structure to be constructed of 5 panels of UHPC casted from a single mold. The mold, which is CNC milled from high density foam uses a series of removable blockouts to fabricate different aperture patterns on the different panels. Then during the first year of COVID, I helped my frugal friends move 6 times, thats 6 times of moving without hiring movers, when I still don’t have a shelf. However, this was when the disposable culture of furniture was most evident to me. In the us in 2018 it was estimated that 12.1 million tons of furniture waste was produced which amounts to 4.1 percent of total waste generated.Over 80 percent of this waste goes to landfills and most of this furniture were made in the last 10 to 15 years. The first was a proof of concept, the concept of the Westside Transmission Building in Vancouver, Canada, where floorplates were hung off of a concrete core with steel cables, rather than supported from the ground up. The second prototype pushed further into collapsability, but had cost issues due to the custom metal work required. The two components are both constructed using a pentagonal module. forming a geodesic frame and the panel that create the “environment”. The vacuum formed plastic can be attached to the frame or be removed, and can vary in color or opacity to better fit the users needs. Contrasting the pragmatic frame against the irregular panels, the “environment” becomes both formal and not at the same time.The framework is constructed out of CNC milled MDF and connected to each other by wood screws. PETG sheets were vacuum formed using those modules to create removable panels that fit perfectly on the frame. People were not allowed to work out in person, and many were restricted to work out at home, and were not able to reap the benefits of the social aspects of going to exercise. It contributes to the vicious cycle of global warming that is highly unsustainable. From our everyday clothing to space suits for astronauts, this project experiments with textiles and synthetic membranes as a construction alternative in the domestic realm. Rather than conventional walls construction, layers of textiles act as movable partitions in this proposal. Inhabitants would able to determine how much space is needed within their homes. When more layers of textiles are stitched on to the first, they can begin to have an experiential effect on the interior environment. Mylar, for example, can be used to reflect back body heat to create a warm bedroom. Linens, can be used for ventilation and mediate heat from gatherings. When we are constantly isolated within a range and grow acclimated to it, we reject temperatures that fall outside of our comfort zone. Eventually, we are inclined to create more of these “comfortable” spaces. Through architecture and relying on systems and machines, we are able to generate more comfort with the consumption of more energy. In return, the excess energy we consume contributes to environmental issues such as global warming which heats the world back up. The implementation of modern technology introduces a shift in purpose for the “enclosure”, placing stronger emphasis on the hearth. Whereas the purpose of the enclosure used to be grounded in its ability to provide shelter for against the external elements. Now, the emphasis of architectural enclosures is not so much in protection, but as a fortification that clearly separates the atmosphere of the interior from the exterior. Accommodating this, tectonics of buildings are engineered for higher efficiency and better performance, the modern building includes elements such as insulation, waterproofing, rain screens, curtain walls. The idea is to combine the textures and its ability to multiply with secondary textures, with with the process texture mapping in 3D modelling. If raw EEG data can be collected and reconstructed as textural image, each emotion can be assigned it’s individual emotional textural map. Working against the conventional pan-cake plan scheme of midrises, each floorplate is distinct in that it shifts, morphs and punctured to create voids such that the all the stories work as a connected whole rather than isolated on its own level. Variable floor heights play with compression and expansion, emphasizing that no two spaces are the same. Layers of overlapping fins wrap the structure creates a patchwork pattern that works to emulate the porosity and lighting atmosphere within a forest.The project assumes a potential revision in the Los Angeles building code to allow for the construction mid-rise mass timber projects. The structure of the project is comprised of structural CLT columns, beams, and floor panels, with concrete cores for systems and vertical circulation and egress. The tension table explores more in its form, color, and the idea of possible explosion of the potential energy stored in its structure at any moment.&nbsp; From the first iteration: Rethinking the tectonics of furniture through the lens of transportation and storage. The intended user for this piece of furniture are college students where moving is inevitable. The project focuses on devising a mechanism that allows for easy construction and deconstruction of an overhanging sidetable as a proof of concept for its application in other pieces of furniture. The mechanism works through tension and compression with 5 basic components; the top (plywood) , the base (plywood), central structure (steel), and tensioning cables. Sandwiched between the divots carved into the top and the base, the central structure resists the gravity loads during use, while the cables resists outward forces, holding all the components together with tension highlighted by the projection of the tabletop. The release of tension in the cables through the turnbuckles deconstructs the table back into its basic components. The table has shown to be stable during use and the mechanism remains durable after multiple cycles of use. <img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" Using hand-tracking tech that are currently underdevelopment, in the near future, we can provide accurate feedback on ASL form and self-correct without needing a tutor.
